DescriptionThis is a PowerPoint file designed to be used on an interactive whiteboard in edit mode (NOT viewed as a Show). This means the file does not have to be used in a strictly linear way, as is normally so when using PowerPoint. Also, elements on the slide can be clicked and dragged. As it is a PowerPoint file, it can be used on any make of whiteboard - unlike a file created using software specific to one type of board only. Using PowerPoint in this way is not my original idea, but I think it has considerable potential.

This file is an electronic version of a traditional classroom activity in which several numbers on a 100 square are covered up and children have to work out which numbers are covered. I have used different colours for each square that covers a number so that children can say which number they have worked out before naming that number and then coming up to the IWB to click and drag the coloured square to reveal the number beneath it.

I have created three slides with 10 numbers covered up on each slide. Working in edit mode makes it quite clumsy to get from one slide to the next, but having three slides to work through does mean there are 30 numbers to work through before needing to cover new numbers.

TRE comment simple but very useful - This is an effective, simple and alternative way to use powerpoint to manipulate the traditional 100 square for the mental oral starter. It is simple to use for teacher and children interactively and requires no detailed technical knowledge. With some expertise could be further adapted to use other numbers and explore number patterns.
