DescriptionThis activity designed by Sarah Quantick (The Community College Whitstable) makes good and easy use of the Intel Play Microscope which most UK schools have. (Otherwise it can be had for about 40 pounds from ebuyer.com while stocks last). The Teachers document has the info - but here are the elements of what's intended.

Activity starter what are living organisms made of?

Show pupils the PowerPoint to stimulate discussion on differences between animal and plant cells. You can find more pictures at Cells Alive www.cellsalive.org or search for Animal Plant Cells at www.google.com/images

Show / hand out different pictures of cells to groups of four, students have to tell the rest of the class the name of their cell and its function

Main activity looking at cells

Show students how to make the onion cell preparation (see pic here). This they do and view under a microscope and a digital microscope. Students print out their pictures and label different parts of the cell.

If possible they draw (or draw around) a cell in the printout.

Plenary Parts of cells

Write the following words on the board (see PowerPoint) and allocate them to separate groups: nucleus, cytoplasm, chlorophyll, chloroplasts, cell wall, cell membrane. In their groups, using books, students have to arrive at a definition for their word. The groups reshuffle as below:
Organise the class as RAINBOW GROUPS ie number each member of a group of four as 1,2,3,4. When the groups have arrived at a definition, all the ones join together to form a new group; all the twos join together to form a new group and so on. Each person in the new group explains the definition of their keyword to the group.

ObjectiveTo produce a clear picture of an onion cell and identify its different parts

This is a resource for pupils age 11 - eg for Key Stage 3 Scheme of Work Unit 7A - Cells - What are cells like?

Prior KnowledgeJust before this you will have introduced students to the fact that all living organisms are made up of cells and different cells have different functions.

HintsHave a fast printer - or use a low-res / black printout
