DescriptionResources related to the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami.

- Further suggestions for Unit 21 (Year 9).
- Quake Record worksheet (with answers) for pupils to look at details of the actual quake of 26/12/04.

- Imaginative writing exercise based on a tsunami in Hawaii.
- Writing frame for pupils to describe effects of an imaginary tsunami at different locations.
- Poster design exercise. This could also be used as a supplement to ICT KS3 Sample Teaching Unit 7.1.
- Small Excel file showing how tsunami waves are affected by depth of water.

Some of the internet sites quoted may be experiencing heavy demand.

ObjectiveUse of a specific, topical example to exemplify the way that current events can be used in geography teaching.

AssessmentAs per the QCA Unit, or as specified in the resources

Prior KnowledgeSome ideas of what tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes involve. Expected knowledge should be greater for older pupils.

Use of Internet to follow hyperlinks, fill in online forms etc. Use of Excel to sort and search data.

ExpectationsUnderstanding of natural hazards and why human settlement patterns may turn these into major disasters.

Use of ICT to access and analyse data.

HintsResource complete (I think!).

Note: These resources tend to emphasise the data and the record of the events. This creates a danger of becoming unduly dispassionate. Remember, many classes across Britain will have children whose families have been affected; to those suffering, the 'facts' are of somewhat secondary importance.

MaterialsMS Word Tsunami links - The main geographical websites will take time to update with latest information on this event. Considered comment and structured resources will appear.

Meanwhile, here is a document with a variety of links relating to the Indonesian Tsunami and similar events. Includes 50+ news, animations, background, map and educational links. Comments give an indication for content of each link.

Some links are bound to change or get removed. Check before use in teaching. If one is unavailable, try an alternative in the list.

TRE comment Cross-curricular opportunities - This is an extremely comprehensive collection of resources both on the physical and human geography of tsunami. There is enough material to provide a whole unit of work.
This is not only a Geography resource; it can obviously be used for the global citizenship aspect of Citizenship in terms of why disasters have a disproportionate effect in LDCs, the work of relief agencies and the role of the UN, governments and charities/NGOs in disaster relief. Worksheets in this resources: 'Tsunami Warning' and 'Tsunami Danger' can be used in English to expore the use of language. Links to news organisations can also be used in Media Studies to explore the role of the media in disasters (supportive of relief or exploitative?).

TRE comment An excellent set of resources - This is an awe inspiring collection of resources which could be used to assist the construction of lessons relating to the tsunami - as the author states, the tsunami cannot be treated as a dispassionate event. However, it cannot be ignored. This material allows the Science behind the event to be explored.

TRE comment Aid agencies - a faith response - This truly comprehensive set of resources provides stimulus for a range of curriculum areas, including religious education. The response of faith-based aid agencies - e.g. Christian Aid and Muslim Aid - raise opportunities to explore the impact of belief on action, identify similarities and differences within and between faiths and also between faith-based aid agencies and secular ones (e.g. Oxfam).

TRE comment Excellent Resources - This comprehensive series of resources includes several which would support upper Key Stage 2 well. The range of resources also gives an idea of sources for covering other events in the news.

The links worked on the 27.9.06.
