Some of the internet sites quoted may be experiencing heavy demand. | | | | Use of a specific, topical example to exemplify the way that current events can be used in geography teaching. | | | | As per the QCA Unit, or as specified in the resources | | | Some ideas of what tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes involve. Expected knowledge should be greater for older pupils.
Use of Internet to follow hyperlinks, fill in online forms etc. Use of Excel to sort and search data. | | | Understanding of natural hazards and why human settlement patterns may turn these into major disasters.
Use of ICT to access and analyse data. | | | Resource complete (I think!).
Note: These resources tend to emphasise the data and the record of the events. This creates a danger of becoming unduly dispassionate. Remember, many classes across Britain will have children whose families have been affected; to those suffering, the 'facts' are of somewhat secondary importance. | | | Tsunami links
- The main geographical websites will take time to update with latest information on this event. Considered comment and structured resources will appear.
Meanwhile, here is a document with a variety of links relating to the Indonesian Tsunami and similar events. Includes 50+ news, animations, background, map and educational links. Comments give an indication for content of each link.
Some links are bound to change or get removed. Check before use in teaching. If one is unavailable, try an alternative in the list.
