This activity designed by Dr Eliot Attridge (The FitzWimarc School, Rayleigh) is a class lesson comprising photographs, worksheets and a card game. At the core of this we use the Intel Play Microscope software to present a slide show and engage the pupils. The lesson includes a slot where you could also use the Intel Play microscope to compare a slide preparation of cheek cells with moss cells and show the chloroplasts. Indeed you could also use this to follow up Sarah Quantick's lesson (nearby in this web) which looks at onion skin cells.

This class lesson by Dr Eliot Attridge shows students a range of cell types and helps them to relate their appearance to the job they do.

Eliot makes use of an interesting array of IT tools, many of which you'd have access to, to prepare his materials. See his document 'How ICT was used' to get a measure of this and don't be surprised if you don't pick up a tip.

The students ought to know that all living things are made of cells. The Onion Cell lesson (again - nearby) has this an its objective.

Check the Teacher's Guide for all the relevance to the KS3 Scheme of Work

Yes, Eliot includes a gimpse of his lesson in the movie file attached. It's for you, not the students, and as its a large file I'd download it separately. Zipping it will not make it much smaller so get it separately, preferably on someone else's phone bill.

Cells - Teachers Guide
- This is the blow by blow guide to the lesson
Cells - Pupils Worksheets
- Two 'differentiated' versions of a 'cut and paste' worksheet to summarise the lesson's work.
Cells - Cell pictures - Zipped
- 18 photos of cells found somewhere in the ether to use as a slideshow as the students settle down for the lesson.
Cells - Cell Pairs - Pupil Card Game
- A neat card game where pupils match cell pictures to the cell functions. It's like snap but different. All is explained in this file which you print onto card and cut into sets.
Cells - How ICT was used
- A teacher tells about the IT used to prepare this lesson including a number of useful tricks and tips
Cells - Cell pictures - Preview
- See this to quickly find out what's in the Cell pictures Zip file. We've scaled the quality and the size down so you see what's there. Remember we didn't use the Intel Microscope for these pictures. (GIF)
